Project background

The Optikos OpTest® lens measurement system is designed to test strictly at infinite conjugate. Learn more about the OpTest® bench system here. The FP-1100 Finite Conjugate Platform allows the standard Object Generator to be moved in two axis, allowing for measurements at finite conjugate.

project scope

The first generation of this system, the FP-1000, had a number of issues. I was tasked with undertaking a whole scale mechanical redesign of the original system to address these issues and to formalize the device as a product ready system.

The FP-1000 had a number of stiffness and vibration issues, as well as a geometric compatibility issue with some OpTest® systems.

project resolution

The final design of the FP-1100 increased the overall stiffness of the 'x axis' travel platform by increasing the thickness of the primary plate, and by re positioning the underlying support structure to optimize bending across the platform.

Vibration issues were solved by increasing the rigidity of the ball screw drive mechanism, increasing the resonant frequency above the usable drive speeds of the carriage.

The system also underwent a whole scale redesign of electronics, wiring, and motion system packaging and alignment.
